Experts to review spillway widening work

HUNZA: The inflow and outflow in Hunza Lake is almost equal as a team of experts will reach Gilgit Saturday to review spillway widening work.

According to Chairman of NDM General(R) Nadeem , a team of experts will reach Gilgit today to review the work of widening of spillway. He said that there are three big stones in the middle of the spillway. If these stones will be removed, water discharge could reach 15,000 to 20,000 cusecs, which will gradually reduce lake level.

Chairman NDM said dynamite will be used for the removal of the stones and government in this connection has completed precautions. About return of IDPs, General Nadeem said the decision about return of IDPs residing in low-lying areas will be taken reviewing the lake situation after removal of the stones.

Hunza affectees vow to continue widening spillway

HUNZA: The affectees of Attabad Lake announced to continue digging of water spillway on Friday to make it wider to allow quick flow of water from the landslide-created lake as inflow and outflow in the lake is almost equal.

DC Hunza Zafar Waqar said inflow into lake is 6400 cusecs and outflow is 6432 cusecs.

Meanwhile affectees of tehsil Gojal have announced to continue the digging of spillway to make it wider whereas Galmat administration has warned affectees that action will be taken against them if they violated the ban imposed to conduct any kind of activity near the lake and seized the boats if they try to reach the lake through boats.

Hunza Lake water outflow exceeds 3,000 cusecs

HUNZA: The overall water discharge from Attabad Lake has exceeded 3,000 cusecs, as water outflow causes erosion of spillway.

Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General (rtd) Nadeem Ahmad after an aerial view of Attabad Lake said that outflow from spillway has crossed 2,600 cusecs whereas seepage is at 400 cusecs. He said swift erosion of spillway could pose a threat.

Meanwhile, four houses have submerged in water in Gulmit and two in Shashkat. On the other hand, water flooded a relief camp in Shashkat Pine. Fifteen families are residing in the camp, which will be shifted to safer place soon.

Sporadic rain in district Hunza-Nagar is hampering rescue activities in the affected areas.

HUNZA: Water outflow from Attabad Lake has been exceeded from 1800 cusecs whereas a relief camp in Shashkat Pine inundated.

The level of lake has been reached to 380 feet. Four houses have been submerged in water in Galmat whereas two in Shashkat. On the other hand, water entered into a relief camp in Shashkat Pine. Fifteen families are residing in the camp, which will be shifted to safer place soon.

Meanwhile, sporadic rain in district Hunza-Nagar hampered rescue activities in the affected areas.

Water discharge increases at Attabad, spillway breakage feared

HUNZA: The water outflow from Hunza Lake has reached 1400 cusecs raising fears of breakage of spillway during the next 24 hours.

According to official sources, the seepage from the spillway has reached 1400 cusecs and the water level in the lake has soared to 8.5 feet since May 29. Next 24 hours are crucial as spillway boundaries are more like to be destroyed due to immense water pressure, they added.

Home department of Gilgit Baltistan announced that Gilgit-Hunza section of Karakoram Highway will remain open for traffic till 4:00 pm today. Helicopter service is also operating in the affected areas to evacuate people and drop relief goods.
